Snippets of Rhythm series

Following the project ‘Open Form’, created in collaboration with the principal dancer of the Royal Opera House, Calvin Richardson, M. Lohrum presents her series ‘Snippets of Rhythm’. In this series the artist applies some of the findings of that collaboration, but adapting them to the repetitive structure and systematisation characteristic of her individual practice. The artist performs on a large scale raw canvas. Each repetitive task or movement routine is associated with a different drawing supplies. Therefore layers are created on the canvas with various gestures and materials. Once the performance is over, the canvas is fragmented in order to highlight certain marks or gestures. The result is a family of images in which the reference to the whole performance is lost, but the imprints and traces of the body remain and gain prominence. These images have an autonomous character, halfway between performative drawing and abstract gestural painting. The canvases included in this series comprise a range of different sizes, from 46x38, 55x46, 65x54, 100x81 to 170x270cm. For details and measures of every piece of work, please click on the images.
